The Her2/Neu (c-erbB-2) proto-oncogene is a transmembrane receptor tyrosine kinase that is clinically indicated in a number of carcinomas. Overexpression of the c-erbB-2 protein has been associated with ductal breast cancer, as well as pulmonary and gastric adenocarcinomas. A correlation between Her2 and p53 has also been documented, as overexpression of both proteins has been associated with early invasion and metastasis in bladder cancer.
HPV16 is one of over 120 different subtypes of human papillomavirus (HPV) that have been identified, with approximately 40 of these subtypes infecting the epithelial lining of the anogenital tract, mouth, and throat. In the majority of cases, infection with HPV is asymptomatic and endogenously resolved, without the need for medical intervention. However, infection with any of 14 “high-risk” types, including HPV16, introduces the risk for developing cervical cancer. Anti-HPV16 can be used as a tool to screen for infection with HPV16, and monitor if the infection carries a risk of becoming cancerous.
In 1993, a novel technology was invented by a team that included Jon Faiz Kayyem, PhD at The California Institute of Technology (CalTech). This invention combined nucleic acids and microelectronics to produce an electronic sensor for DNA detection. His invention was based on electrical detection of nucleic acids on a cassette based detection platform. Dr. Kayyem went on to found Clinical Micro Sensors, with the goal of translating this “eSensor” technology to disposable chips. Following several acquisitions of the technology, Dr. Kayyem became actively involved again in 2009, returning as an investor and then as CEO and Chairman of the Board.
In 2009, a collaboration between Dr. Kayyem and Christopher Gleeson began. The two redefined the company strategy, and brought in a new board of directors, executive leadership team, and commercial management. In 2010, the company known at that time as Osmetech, was named GenMark Diagnostics and listed on NASDAQ. Mr. Gleeson remained an integral part of GenMark’s growth in the years that followed, serving as Chairman of the Board until his retirement in 2014. SureThin® is an efficient, thorough cervical smear technique. The easy application results in diagnostically conclusive findings. In addition to the valuable consumables of the SureThin® product line, the SureThin® Processor completes the technical part of the application.
The sample vial is placed in the chamber of the SureThin® Processor, along with a filter and microscope slide. A gentle dispersion step thoroughly mixes the cell sample and breaks up blood, mucus and non-diagnostic debris. The cells are then collected on a filter specifically designed to collect diagnostic cells. A thin layer of cells is then transferred onto a glass slide and automatically deposited into a fixative solution.
During the process, every current step is displayed on the device‘s screen. The slideable glass front of the SureThin® Processor gives full control and insight into the application to the user.
